Life - Life After Death (1974)

UK heavy prog act, Life, are another act whose history is shrouded in total mystery. This is particularly odd since their sole album was released by Polydor Records in 1974, but sadly there's nothing I can tell you about the band's accomplishments or their post-breakup activities.

Upon first hearing this fantastic album, distinct shades of Uriah Heep come bursting forth and persist throughout each of the tracks here. In fact, their influence is so prevalent here that it can sometimes be daunting to figure out Life's true creative viewpoint. Taking Heep as a starting point, the band also brings other styles into the mix that each point to some of rock's biggest names. Whether it is just certain instruments, writing styles or entire songs, bands like ELP, Santana, Argent & Kansas (minus violin) all come to mind at certain points on this record. One must acknowledge this overbearing nod to other artists when evaluating Life's writing and perfoming talents. If you can get past the derivative nature of the music, the songs themselves are all well written and dripping with hooks. This is very well done prog influenced hard rock.

Collectors drop good money to snag this album and surprisingly no label has opted to do a reissue. To remedy that problem, enjoy this good vinyl rip and indulge yourself in one of England's most overlooked classic acts.

Even the cover is somewhat derivitive of Queen's Sheer Heart Attack. Maybe it's the "after" picture.

I've always thought it reminded me of Heep's "Ver 'Eavy, Very 'Umble" album. I guess it's the spiderweb effect that conjures up that image in my head.

Beaugraham, let me make something perfectly clear to you. I don't put up with hateful pushy bullshit on my own damn blogsite. The fact that I've indulged you thus fur by posting your bossy comments is considerably more tolerant than I usually am. I DON'T OWE YOU SHIT, MUCH LESS A REPOST.

Bottom, line. I post music & hopefully someone enjoys it while it's there. Sometimes when possible I repost, however I no longer have this title. I had an external drive crash & lost 450gb of music.

Maybe a reader who has previously DL'd this title can re-up it for your sake. That's the best I can do.

there is no need to swear fair enough though i deserved that i thought id try a different approach normally i would never be that pushy at all. I thought maybe being forcefull would get you motivated to repost this album cause of course you are the only person on the net that has it had it and being that im the biggest classic rock and obscure classic rock buff on the planet i had to hear it i will keep searching. later

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
REPOST THE ALBUM

JKR said...

Does anyone read the comments? I DON'T HAVE THIS ALBUM ANY LONGER.

beaug said...

god im sorry for what i started someone else asked for a repost if he would have read you chewing me out he would see that you dont have it. man this must be one hell of an album so tell me what is it like name some bands that these guys sound like. thank you

Life are very similar to Uriah Heep & maybe even Old Man & the Sea. Lots of organ & solid vocals with just enough hooks to avoid this becoming a full-blown prog wankfest. I think the demand is more a symptom of this being a rarity, as opposed to it being some lost classic. It's decent, but by no means a collector's holy grail.

yah i see what you mean the demand for something gets more attention if it is harder to find. Well thats good to know everyone now and then i will search for it another album that is super hard to find is a jazz rock band from chicago called madura have you ever heard of them???

Hi there, when i was a pre-teen in the '70's, my gran had a step-daughter who worked for a record company, so when my gran used to come and stay she always brought a stack of rock/pop promo singles over with her, many of which never became hits. (She didn't know what they were lol, but i wish i still had them now.) Anyway thanks to the net i've been re-living those times cos a lot of them can be found online on blogs like this one.

One of the singles was Woman b/w Bless My Soul by Life on Polydor. I would love to hear those two tunes again so if you're up for it ronnie beau, you can certainly email them to me. Lemme know and I'll put an email adress up here. I check here from time to time anyway cos I'm still searching for these songs.

Cheers,

Bye for now,

P. Slade

I know a little about what happened to this band: their keyboardist Ian Gibbons later wound up in The Kinks. The album was produced by Chris White, ex-bass player of the Zombies, which I suppose accounts for the Argent similarity (Rod Argent also being an ex-Zombie).

managed to pick the Life - life after death album from ebay, this is so gooooood, full of classy guitar/organ interplay with 'die for' melodies and awesome vocal harmonies, a must for all fans of hard prog/rock.
